Bishop Challoner (girls) School

Project 1 : Bridging the digital divide
Project 1 Aims:
To increase the confidence of two talented and gifted children.
To improve their computer skills
To assist two children who need to improve on literacy but are faced with difficult conditions in the home environment.

Project Method:

Two students have been given laptops to do schoolwork and to gain more experience and confidence in using computers. They use them in the home environment where they would never have been able to access this type of equipment. The laptops have Star Office on them.
The aim of this was to Bridge the divide between the underprivileged and the gifted and talented to try and find a route to where they can gain confidence in their own abilities.

Expected outcomes:
Increased confidence and improved performance.
Timeline:
Continual to build on confidence. No end date.
Method of recording project:
Patrick is going to send us quotes of what they have learnt from using them at home and hopefully a copy of some of their work.
Resources available to project:
2 laptops
Star Office software.
Constraints and Opportunities that have been discovered:
The computers must stay at home as it is too dangerous for the children to bring to and from school, so it is difficult to see work that has been done.

Project 2: Design and Technology Laptops Project

Project Aims:
To work with a small group of Year 5 pupils from a local primary school.
To allow the pupils to have an opportunity to use the facilities in our new technology block. Specifically CAD computer Aided Design/CAM computer Aided Manufacturing.
To celebrate and communicate learning and achievement using laptop and the webwisewapping website.

Expected outcomes:
To design and make a book mark. This would move from designing a bookmark using computers to implementing its construction using a computer controlled milling machine.
The outcomes will be published on the www website.

Timeline:
They have contacted the school - St Mary and St Michael and a visit has been agreed in the Summer term, following the fire at the school.
Planned and scheduled extensive use during the summer term is in place.

Method of recording project:
Through a newsletter the children will produce a document that states their progress using the Tools for Schools laptops, using various packages to develop their IT skills.
Strengthening relationships further with the primary school - we would form links with other neighbouring primary schools and re-use the model to share good practice.

Resources available to project:
10 Tools for Schools laptops located at Bishop Challoner.
High technologically advanced computer equipment.
Constraints and Opportunities that have been discovered:
Time and space in planning
